Sharpen Your Tools: a Tableau Exercise

Hello Advisory Group participant! The rollout of Hotspotting Toolkit beta content has finally begun! Our regularly scheduled interactions around the Toolkit will begin soon,  and the look and structure of this site will continue to evolve.  In the meanwhile, we want to get everyone up and running with one of the tools we’ll be using: Tableau. Tableau offers a fully functional free trial version for those of you who do not already have the software installed. Below is an embedded, interactive, graph created with Tableau, using publicly available data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).  You’ll see this graph again illustrating the background text of the Toolkit Module 1.

You can explore many of Tableau’s features with these simple datasets. To familiarize yourself with the software, download the BEA and CMS files and prepare them for import. Once you have brought the data into Tableau, try to recreate the visualization above or come up with a few of your own. Play with the software and explore the online tutorials. One key to a successful experience with Tableau is proper data formatting.  You may find the Tableau Excel add-in useful in reshaping you your data. When you have gone as far as you can with the exercise, you can upload your packaged Tableau workbook (.twbx file) below.

Email questions about the exercise or software to “toolkit.” Email any comments or difficulties with the website to “web.”
